HONG KONG - Worldwide mobile connections are expected to reach US$4.99 billion by 2012, and revenues could top US$1,019 billion, according to market research firm Ovum.
China and India are predicted to move far ahead of the competition to be the two largest global markets, accounting for 31 percent of global mobile connections, by 2012.
But although China Mobile and Bharti are expected to gain increasing importance on the global stage, the major setback will be the relatively low spending of customers in the China-India region, with Ovum predicting that their massive 2012 market share will only account for 18 percent of global mobile revenue.
