SHANGHAI - Below are some reactions to the story that Cai Mingchao was the winning bidder for the two bronze relics that were put on auction at Christie's over the weekend.

According to the Oriental Morning Post, 74.6% of netizens support the fake bid, 17.8% don't support it, and 3.2% support the bid but believe Cai Mingchao should pay the money.

Some netizens posted the following comments.

A Korean wrote: “French robbers! You don’t deserve the bronzes. Don't give them money, should we talk about credibility before robbers!?”

A netizen from Fujian wrote: “That's a very clear way to punish them, I support the fake bid!”

A netizen from Singapore posted: “We have to treat hooligans in their own way. All the rules are made by those who have power. Jungle rule is the only real rule in the world.”

A German netizen said: “Well done! You are just satisfying your own vanity by behaving noble in front of robbers!”

However, some had a different view believing that the fake bid could destroy China's reputation.

A netizen said: “I personally don’t agree with the way Cai showed his patriotism. Where is the credibility? Is losing your credibility a way to love your country?”

Another netizen posted: “We had reasons to criticize before, now we have no reason any more. We did the same kind of shameful thing. What's the difference between us?”

Here is a selection of comments from Sina.com:

What really happened has yet to be publicized, however, one point is certain: If you will not play according to the rules, we won't either! We will treat him as he treats us, treat a hooligan the same way he behaves.

(2009-03-03 09:33:20)
If you don’t pay for the bid, you have to face legal punishment. This is the rule. No matter how patriotic Chinese are, we still need to follow rules. It was because the Qing government didn’t play the game by the rules that the French and British forces sacked and burned the Summer Palace. If you don’t want to follow the rules, then close the door of your country.

This is a classic “international joke”. Only Chinese understand the core of this joke. Foreigners may just consider this guy a troublemaker.
Different people, different views.
I think we should still play by the rules.

Although it is just a way to promote himself, it still protected our relics. So it is a win-win strategy. It reflects the ancient oriental wisdom. I have to say, Fujian people, you are cunning!

Our aim is to make the the auction fail. If we can not achieve our goal by legal methods, the fake bid is the way we have to do it. There are consequences. But if we Chinese support it, we can see the good effects of the fake bid.
